Net als zijn grotere broer met de index 4007 bestaat de modelnaam van deze nieuwe crossover uit vier cijfers. Dit wijst op de SUV-lijn van het merk. De 3008 is een belangrijke speler in het SUV-segment. De auto heeft concurrenten als de VW Tiguan, Ford Kuga en Nissan Qashqai onder druk gezet. De Peugeot 3008 wordt geleverd in configuraties met 5 en 7 zitplaatsen, met vierwielaandrijving of met aandrijving waarbij het koppel alleen naar de voorwielen gaat. De basisversie is voorwielaangedreven en zuiniger qua brandstofverbruik en milieubelasting. De 4x4-variant biedt meer terreinvaardigheid, al maakt de beperkte bodemvrijheid echt zwaar offroad rijden lastig.
